We’re heading into Autumn, and you’ll soon be diving into all of your favorite pumpkin dishes. But here’s an interesting fact you may not have known about that can of pumpkin puree in your recipe – it may not actually be pumpkin. The can may say 100% pumpkin but, it’s most likely not the kind of pumpkin you think it is. The type you carve up into jack-o-lanterns and display by your front door is not what’s going into the can. It’s most likely another kind of squash. For instance, Libby’s brand mostly uses a type of squash called Dickinson squash for its canned pumpkin. Other brands have been known to use Boston marrow squash, Golden Delicious squash, and even butternut squash. The companies are able to get away with labeling their products 100% pumpkin because there are so many different varieties of pumpkin squash.
