Checkpoint/Strikeforce is out to stop drunk driving with sobriety checkpoints and patrols every week, everywhere in the Commonwealth of Virginia. If you're going to drink, plan not to drive.

Checkpoint Strikeforce

  • In its second year, Checkpoint Strikeforce is a highly focused, zero tolerance, continuous law enforcement effort to catch and arrest drunk drivers via sobriety checkpoints. The Virginia program is part of a larger mid-Atlantic states effort.
  • The main target is males aged 21 to 35, a demographic group that is statistically most at risk for drunk driving.
  • The campaign is supported by a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grant through the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

    Some Facts

  • During the past 20 years, the number of deaths annually from drunk driving has ranged from 393 in 1981 to a high of 535 in 1990 and a low of 302 in 1997. (Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles)
  • An increasing percentage of Virginia's highway fatalities are alcohol related (41 percent in 2002; 38 percent in 2001). (Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles)
  • In addition to the jump in fatalities, more persons are being injured in alcohol related crashes (8,465 persons injured in 2002; 8,211 in 2001). (Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles)
